Perc Up! 2004 at Eastside High School

Perc Up Percussion Clinic and Showcase! Wow!

Perc Up! 2004, a one-of-a-kind percussion event, was hosted April 24th by the Eastside High School Bands, in Taylors, South Carolina.  According to attendees, Perc Up turned out to be one of the most successful percussion events around.  Percussion clinics and coaching were given by world class champions like Jeff Queen  (Carolina Crown, DCI Snare world champion, Blast!), Rob Sullens  (University of South Carolina, Epiphany, Tampa Bay Thunder Drum & Bugle Corps), and Thom Hannum   (Blast!, DCI World Champion Cadets of Bergen County, and Star of Indiana)!

Perc Up! clinics successfully taught students how to improve percussion techniques, instrument mastery, and how to build a percussion vocabulary .  The Percussion Showcase featured some of the world's best percussionists.  Thom Hannum masterfully played "Got a Pulse."  Coastal Carolina University expertly intrigued the audience with Japanese Taiko Percussion.  Eastside High School performed their marching percussion ensemble to the cheers of the crowd.  Furman University skillfully demonstrated Afro-Cuban percussion ensembles with audience involvement.  The finale' featured Jeff Queen playing "Tribute," which overwhelmed both percussion students and audience alike!

Perc Up attendees received personal instruction and coaching from some of the best drummers in the world, like Jeff Queen !

Jeff Queen performed "Tribute" to an enthusiastic group of students in the clinic and again to the public in the Percussion Showcase.  Chins dropped while drum sticks flew!

Jeff taught the students how to develop good practice habits, how to increase playing speed, how to get different sounds from the instrument, and other topics. Jeff also emphasized that if you will not master the basics, you will never move to into advanced playing.

Percussionist Jeff Queen is the winner of multiple DCI and PAS Individual Percussion Awards.  He is an original cast member and soloist of the Tony and Emmy award winning hit Broadway smash Blast!  Jeff has been original cast member, solo performer and battery instructor since 1999.

Thom Hannum masterfully played solos which displayed sophisticated, rudimental and extremely advanced snare drumming!  Thom also emphasized going back to basics to be able to improve advanced playing.  Thom taught from one of his articles on how to build your percussion vocabulary.

Thom Hannum has long been regarded as one of the nation’s foremost percussion arrangers, instructors, and clinicians; having presented numerous seminars and workshops throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, and Southeast Asia.

He is best known for his work with the DCI World Champion Cadets of Bergen County and Star of Indiana. Thom is a member of the design team for the Tony Award Winning show Blast! as well as Cyber Jam.  In the summer of 2001, Mr. Hannum was selected for induction into the DCI Hall of Fame.

Both Thom and Jeff want to return next year for Perc Up! 2005.
