Perc Up 2005 FAQ Frequently Asked Questions Who can attend Perc Up 2005? Anyone... we encourage all percussion and band students to attend from middle school grades through college. Keep in mind that there will be different levels of proficiency attending - from beginners to the most experienced musicians. Our goal is for everyone attending to learn new skills and to apply them during the evening performance. Our students will be instructed in assigning parts according to skill level, while also challenging each student to achieve a higher skill level. What if we have a scheduling conflict the Greenville Arts Festival? We will allow the student to "slip out" for their fine arts performance, and come back to the Perc Up event afterward. What about PAS South Carolina Day of Percussion conclict?
We encourage attendance to all percussion events! We are supporters of the Percussive Arts Society and percussion in general. We selected our date in summer of 2004 and even tried to change it to not conflict with the PAS event in South Carolina, when we found out in February 2005. We earnestly tried to pick a date as to not conflict with other South Carolina Band events also. Clinicians, air fare, etc were difficult to change.
Can non-percussionists attend the event? Yes, but they can "audit" the classes. Students who have had no prior instruction in percussion may come and receive instruction in our classes, but may not be able to perform in the evening. Exceptions may be made if someone can read music. What happens at the event? In clinic sessions, each student, band director or instructor attends clinics and percussion classes on percussion technique, performance, improvement, leadership, motivation, drum tuning, instrumentation and more. In Master Classes and Coaching sessions, students will be teamed and coached for improvement. The afternoon percussion workshops and master classes allow rehearsal time. Each team will assess skill levels of team members, assign parts, write or read percussion music in preparation for a informal Percussion Showcase competition and concert. Scheduled observation by competent instructors will help the students develop their skills. In the evening, The Percussion Showcase will feature Jeff Queen's solo as well as other ensembles and percussion features. Can a student attend if not part of a band program? Yes. We welcome all interested percussionists. We already have some registered independent students or students where their entire percussion section members are not able to make it.
Can middle school students attend?
Yes! Middle schools students and groups are encouraged to attend Perc Up! Will the event be chaperoned? Yes. Responsible adults will be stationed in every area to supervise. What should our drumline play? We will provide ad advanced copy of a percussion chart so each player can be familiar with the music ahead of time. The clinicians will help students during the afternoon master class work shops, to prepare for the evening performances and overal improvement. Jeff Queen, Thom Hannum, and the other clinicians will personally coach and help participants. Can our high school percussion section perform an existing winter or fall piece? Yes. We have room for several good exhibition ensembles, both concert and marching. This is a chance to get your drumline critiqued by some of the worlds best clinicians. Should we bring our pit? Yes! If you have a pit (front ensemble) in your percussion section, you are welcome to bring them to participate. There is plenty of room for any set-up. However, we understand the challenges of hauling equipment. Since the teams are made up of different players, we already know some schools will be able to share and we should have plenty of instruments for each group to perform. It would really help if you can bring your instruments for the afternoon practice sessions. *If you absolutely cannot bring your instruments, please do not let that keep you from coming... we will do everything we can to help out! Do we march or stand still if we are in the Percussion Showcase? You decide. If you can include some marching maneuvers you can. If not... that is OK. Creativity often involves not "thinking in the box" so your own creativity and what you can accomplish is up to you and the leadership of your group. Time may limit the ability of each team but we encourage any creativity. Please make prior arrangement since space may be limited. Are there any performance opportunities for small ensembles or soloists? Yes, we are open to your group performing, subject to approval by our board. Many directors have expressed an interest in making future events a two or three day event, so that we could include ensembles and soloists. We are still interested in having more exhibtions during the evening showcase, however, so if you would like to perform then, please contact us at info@percup.org. What should our group do when we are done performing? Sit down and watch the others perform! The clinic is open to the public and we want all groups to see one another play for the experience of learning. This is an opportunity for the students to see what other high schools do, as well as see the other clinics with Jeff Queen, Greg Dearman, etc. Is this a competition? No. We first envisioned an informal competition, however, we found it to be more successful as a one-of-a-kind event. This event offers the students a good performance opportunity and feedback from great percussionists. There will be personal coaching from some of the best percussionists in the world!. This will be very educational! What should we bring? We encourage all to bring pen/pencils and notebooks to jot down inspirational ideas, session notes, etc. Also, any equipment you can bring such as marching snare drums, basses, marimbas, sticks, mallets, etc. Quick Checklist
What can I do to prepare for the Perc Up percussion event? Some suggestions are brush up on your site reading and get your "chops" ready before you attend. If you do not, however, YOU ARE STILL WELCOME! You will be shown ways to build your percussion skills at the event. What about food for lunch and supper breaks? There will be a good variety of food and beverages for sale at affordable prices. What is the deadline for registration? The registration deadline is April 20, 2005 or until the event is filled. There mayl be a grace period registration however, the penalty for late registration is $5. Special arrangements may be considered by contacting us with special situations. How much does it cost for students to attend? Students registering by the deadline will receive a discounted price.
That sounds very inexpensive for an all day event like this... is $20 really the registration fee for the whole day? Yes! We want as many students as possible to be able to come. If the $20 is a hardship, some scholarships are available from donors who believe in what we are doing. We have several parents who donated above the $20 when sending their registrations in, to help others attend. Please contact us if you know of any special situations. Can I donate to the cause? Yes. We are still accepting sponsorship and donations to fund the event. We will be diligently working to make next year's Perc Up even bigger and better. Any help is greatly appreciated. What do the Percussion Showcase concerts and shows cost? Tickets for the evening showcase will be $5. Kids under 4 are free. Special discounts may be available for groups over 10. What do I get for my registration fee? In addition to clinics, workshops and the Percussion Showcase, students will receive a nice certificate of participation and an event T-shirt. T-shirts and space may be limited so please register as soon as you can. All of these are subject to change and availability. Door prizes and drawings will be sponsored as well. Last year we gave out an estimated value of $4000-6000 in prizes. All students received a stick bag from Zildjian and T-shirts, however, many received sticks, mallets, hats, drum heads, percussion literature, cd's, autographed items, dinner at nice restaurants, and more! How soon should we register? We encourage all to register as quickly as possible to ensure participation. This is only because the response to pre-launch material was overwhelmingly good! There is a possibility that we could fill the capacity and need to limit registrations. Next year's Perc Up will likely be in a bigger venue like the Palmetto Expo Center or Timmons Arena. Why is Perc Up held at Eastside High School? This year the facility was available at Eastside since Jim is the percussion instructor for Eastside. We are looking at other locations for future events. How can I sign up? You can download a registration form, then mail or fax (with credit card info) to 1-206-888-PERC (7372). For registration click here! Your event phone number is not a South Carolina number. Why? We needed to be as efficient as possible and this number (1-206-888-PERC) is both a voice mail and a fax line. It will digitize each call to be able to send to our email for easy tracking management. This was an efficient and inexpensive option to use. You may also call the Eastside High School band room at 864-292-7732 for info or help. Or email us at info@percup.org . Are there any freebies or door prizes to be won? Yes. Several sponsors are providing things like percussion literature, drum sticks, mallets, cymbals, drum heads, autographed items, cd's, dinners, T-shirts and more. We gave out an estimated $4000-6000 worth of prizes last year. Can other schools or venues host the event? Yes. We are working on localizing Perc Up in the future, to accommodate more student and school attendance. We have already been invited to Florida and Virginia to sponsor more events. How can my business sponsor or help? We appreciate any help you can provide. We do not want to ever "beg" for funds to help music education. We are open unique ideas to help Perc Up continue to be successful. We accept donations of any amount. Your business can also sponsor program ads, vendor or exhibitor booths, banners at the event, etc. Any business donating more than $50 will have their name, logo or web site link on the Perc Up web site (which at the time of this writing gets over 20,000 hits per month). Any donation, unless you wish to remain anonymous, will receive a mention in the program and the web site, www.percup.org . Volunteers are also needed to help with AV equipment, event set up, event clean up, errands, tables, chairs, etc. Can parents come watch their students at the Percussion Showcase? Yes, tickets will be sold in advance and at the door for the evening performances. Tickets are $5 and kids under 4 free. Special discounts may be available for groups over 10. What does it cost for Band directors or percussion instructors? Band directors and percussion instructors (verified) can attend at no charge whether they bring students or not. We hope you will encourage your students to come, though! *** Be notified, however.... we just might put some of you to work!!! Or invite you to share successful ideas at the Directors PERK UP coffee and dessert forum. Can my college set up a booth? How much will it cost? Free! Colleges and universities can set up a recruitment booth at no charge by letting us know in advance. What are the topics at the Perk Up Coffee and Dessert Forum?
